“A real miracle man.” - Larry Jennings
Dorian Rhodell is not only an avid practitioner of card magic, he is also a former student of the late Larry Jennings. His style and technique, although more classical, have been tailored for a modern audience and will suit any performance atmosphere.
The effects explained on this DVD have served his professional repertoire for many years and are sure to bring new wonder and excitement to your audiences.
“An amazing student, an excellent performer, and an insightful creator. Dorian combines worldliness and charm with expert sleight-of-hand and his own quirky brand of humor to deliver stunning results.” - Paul Chosse
Journey down an avenue of classic design, modern thinking and professional direction and experience the card magic of Dorian Rhodell.
Contents
For the most part, the following effects utilize a sleight known as Pughe's Pass. Dorian uses this sleight as a color change and thoroughly explains all the mechanics behind it.
Grease Lightning v1
A visual transposition of the four aces and the four kings that goes like this: A spectator is asked which would they prefer, “Aces or Kings?” Whatever their choice, these four cards, let’s say Kings, are cleanly inserted into separate parts of the deck and left protruding. The Aces are placed face up on top. With just a snap, the Aces visually change into Kings. The protruding cards are removed and shown to be the Aces.
This is a remarkable effect that gets killer reactions.
Grease Lightning v2
This is a variation of Grease Lighting that will fool even magicians. Perhaps one of the most visual and direct effects on the DVD.
Snap Exchange
Similar in effect to Grease Lightning, however, this time the four Kings are placed face down in four different parts of a face-up deck. After the aces are placed face up on top and then suddenly change into the Kings, the whole deck is spread out to reveal the four Aces are now reversed in the deck.
Joyride
A sandwich effect utilizing a four of a kind, such as the four Jacks. Not only do the Jacks find the selection, they mysteriously transpose with each other a few times giving a new twist on this classic effect.
Recon
After a card has been selected, three random cards are removed and shown. Instantly these cards and changed into the selection...that’s right...all three cards appear identical and match the selection. Of course this could only be an illusion, so the magician casually changes them back into the three random cards.
This quick little tricks plays big and gets even bigger reactions.
Sidetracked
After four Queens are presented, the magicians asks for three selections to be made. These cards are noted and set aside. The magician, holding the Queens in his hand, instantly changes them into the three selections. The Queens are now cleanly shown to be the cards on the table (or in a spectators hand).
A.F.I.
Here is Dorian’s take on the classic Inversion effect. Any card is selected and placed back into the deck. With no apparent moves, the selection instantly turns face down. The next time the magician leaves the selection sticking out of the deck, however, instead of the card turning over, the whole deck visually turns face up right in front of the spectators eyes.
Finders Keepers
The two black Aces are produced and a card is selected and returned. One at a time, the black Aces vanish. When the Aces are reproduced, between them is the selection. The magician hands the selection back to the spectator and asks her to wave the card over the Aces. When she does, the magicians slowly spreads the two black Aces to show they have turned into the four Aces, and face down between each Ace is the mates to the selection.
| Errata:
The routine on the DVD entitled "Finders Keepers" was originally
entitled "AK-47" in Dorian Rhodell's lecture notes of 2005. In those
notes, he credited Tony Picasso as the inspirational source for the routine. Unfortunately we inadvertently left the credit for the
inspiration out of the DVD. We regret any inconvenience this omission
has caused and rely on the written record for evidence that it was
unintentional. |

Author: Juan Martinez If you are willing to put in the practice it is much recommended. But if you are willing to practice and learn from how Dorian has taken some classical effects and turned them into routines, then definitely get it. Remember, one of the main aspects of the DVD is Dorian’s thinking. Do learn the methods, but also focus on learning the reasoning behind those methods. You will not be disappointed.

Author: Johan Sundvall I purchased Avenue and I must say that I really enjoy it. The only thing that i was hopeing for that was not on it is some Live Performances. Not to say that the content of this DVD is not good, it's quite the opposite. Dorian discribes the routines very well and the "Tools" section is awesome. I truly recommend this DVD.
Most of the routines if not all will go into my repertoire. Thank you Dorian, for shareing some of your secrets with us.

Author: Dmagic Dorian is a good friend of mine. Trust me this DVD is awesome. There is in depth instruction, and the effects are amazing. Go buy this DVD now, and get a pack of Smoke and Mirrors, because otherwise you'll have to stop the DVD and go get one (really).

Author: Matthew Field (Magic Circular) The subtitle of this DVD is 'Thinking and Direction in Card Magic', and Dorian Rhodell has broken the disk up into four sections: Thinking, Direction, Tools and References. The last section, quite detailed and excellent, is a 5-page PDF on the disk.Although the name was new to me, Mr. Rhodell was a student of one of my very favourite card magicians, Larry Jennings. There are eight effects performed and explained on the disc, with three sleights explained: Pughe's Pass (from Greater Magic), a Shift based on the one invented by Guy Hollingworth, and the Mexican Monte Move. That places the material at the intermediate skill level.
The tricks are, for the most part, good. There's a transposition of the Kings and Aces in the deck, a somewhat "handle-y" version of the Jennings classic Visitor, handlings of the Inversion plot and Quick 3-Way and a very nice sandwich effect, Finders Keepers, with a surprising kicker.
The camera work is excellent, with fine close-up camera work which I wish more sleight-of-hand DVDs adopted. Dan and Dave Buck are the producers and directors, and they know what they are doing. The DVD is shot without an audience, which makes this a card fanatic's disk.
I'm a card fanatic, though, and I really enjoyed this.
